What is the Direct Vision Standard?

DVS compliance — what every East Midlands haulier needs to know

The Direct Vision Standard rates HGVs between 0 and 5 stars based on how much the driver can directly see from the cab without camera or mirror assistance. Any HGV over 12 tonnes with a star rating below the required level must fit a DVS Safe System of cameras, sensors and alerts before it can legally operate in Greater London. This affects the vast majority of East Midlands hauliers running routes via the M1, A14 or A1(M) into London.

"A £550 daily fine per non-compliant vehicle adds up fast. One vehicle running three days a week into London without a permit costs over £85,000 a year in penalties."

Who needs DVS compliance?
Any operator running HGVs over 12 tonnes into Greater London — including occasional deliveries. If your vehicle could enter the Greater London boundary, it needs a valid DVS permit.
Critical routes for East Midlands hauliers
A14/M11 corridor from Corby and Kettering to London. M1 from Northampton, Leicester and Rugby. A1(M) from Stamford and Peterborough. If your fleet uses any of these routes into London, DVS compliance is a legal requirement.
What the DVS Safe System must include
Side-facing nearside camera, rear-facing camera, proximity sensors detecting cyclists and pedestrians, audible left-turn warning system and in-cab monitors showing live camera feeds.
The £550 daily penalty — per vehicle
Non-compliant HGVs face a Penalty Charge Notice of £550 per day in Greater London. For a fleet of 10 vehicles running weekly London routes, the cost of non-compliance is enormous.
FORS compliance — Bronze, Silver and Gold
The DVS systems we fit meet FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) requirements at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels — essential for operators tendering for public sector contracts.
We fit at your depot — minimal disruption
We travel to your haulage yard or fleet depot across Corby, Northampton, Leicester, Rugby and the East Midlands. Multiple vehicles can be scheduled across planned downtime to minimise operational impact.

What is included in a DVS Safe System

Complete DVS compliance package — everything included

01
Nearside blind spot camera
Side-facing camera covering the nearside blind spot — the area most dangerous to cyclists and pedestrians during left turns. Feeds live to the in-cab monitor.
02
Rear-facing reversing camera
Rear camera providing a live view when reversing — reducing the risk of incidents during manoeuvring at depots, loading bays and delivery points.
03
Proximity sensors — cyclists & pedestrians
Sensors detecting vulnerable road users in the blind spot areas around the vehicle. Alert the driver before a left turn or manoeuvre is made.
04
Audible left-turn warning system
External audible alert warning cyclists and pedestrians when your HGV is turning left. A TFL DVS Safe System requirement for all non-compliant star-rated vehicles.
05
In-cab monitors — live camera feeds
In-cab display showing live feeds from all cameras. Driver always has visibility of blind spots before and during manoeuvres.
06
Full installation, testing and handover
We install, test and sign off the complete system. You receive full documentation confirming DVS Safe System compliance — ready for your TFL permit application.
